A controversial wind farm on the edge of the Lake District national park which was opposed by many local climbers, including Chris Bonington and Doug Scott, has been refused planning permission.
It would have seen nine turbines installed at Berrier Hill, Greystoke, four miles from Penrith, on the A66 route taken by thousands of North East visitors to the Lake District.
Eden District Council, which rejected the planning bid, leading to a public inquiry, has received notification that the Government supports the decision of planning Inspector Andrew Pykett, to dismiss an appeal by Berrier Hill Wind Energy Limited.A public inquiry was held between September and February.
The Campaign for National Parks (CNP) said that the turbines would have affected the view of Blencathra, or Saddleback – the distinctive mountain which is a gateway feature to the Lake District from the east.
CNP's Amy Peters said: “While renewable energy is a crucial part of the fight against climate change, developments must be sited sensitively in or near to our most precious landscapes.“
A spokesman for the Lake District National park said: “The A66 with its views of Saddleback is the main route for people travelling from the North East and the windfarm would have had a detrimental impact.”
