Shareholders of the German energy company RWE Innorgy are celebrating after the Welsh Assembly and UK government gave the go ahead for the construction of the world's biggest wind farm off the coast of North West Wales. Construction will begin next year on the Gwynt y Mor. The newly installed Tory Welsh Secretary, Cheryl Gillan commented...
"This is excellent news...It will also become one of the largest offshore windfarm projects in Europe,'.
The development which will totally transform the outlook from the not just the coastal towns but also for those far inland on higher ground looking out to sea and who will observe a seascape that inspired artists such as William Turner, now dotted with 400' feet industrial towers.
John Lawson-Reay, chairman of Save our Scenery, is doubtful about how many jobs will be created in Wales.Mr Lawson-Reay said Germany and the Netherlands would benefit the most.
He said: "Three German companies are doing it. Yes, there will be a few jobs. They will get Dutch people in to operate the rigs.
"There will be a few jobs in Mostyn where they're handling the equipment but as far as this part of the world is concerned, you can forget it.
"There's no prospect of us in this particular area getting anything out of this."
