Lighter later step up campaign

    by Michael Smith (Veshengro)

Lighter Later has on November 9, 2010 called on people to set up face-to-face meetings with their MPs to change the way clocks go back next year.

The campaign's manager, Daniel Vockins, appealed to people to contact their MP ahead of a planned Parliamentary vote on December 3.

The campaign aims to stop the resetting of clocks so that it believes means expensive and polluting electric lights are used more to keep out the dark nights.

Their plan is simple - shifting the clocks forward by one hour throughout the entire year.

But, we would still put the clocks forward in spring and back in autumn, but we would have moved an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening, when the campaign believes more of us are awake to enjoy it

Mr Vockins said: "The countdown is on. The big vote on lighter evenings takes place on December 3 and we need to get 102 MPs voting in favour to pass the bill.

"Apparently you need two extra ones just to call out the results - Parliament is a strange place!

"We can do this, but only if we go all out. Over the next month we're going to work together on four weekly challenges to get those MPs committing. Let's get started!"

As far as I am concerned, IMO, this entire harebrained idea has nothing to do with saving energy or whatever but all with the issue of being on the the time as the rest of the European Union. This is not good news for the environment nor for the United Kingdom.

Can these wallies who promote this harebrained scheme please tell me what people are supposed to do who start work, in the outdoors, such as farmers, park staff, etc. at 7.30am in the morning when it is not getting light under there scheme until about 9am in winter. This is stupidity beyond comprehension.

Instead of this we should go back to staying on one time permanently, whether this be GMT, or BST, but stop switching from one GMT to summer time. The best idea would be to return to the permanent use of GMT.

Let's tell our MPs no to the harebrained idea of going on to, basically, Central European Time and Central European Summer Time respectively.

It is all to do with working, as I have sai, on the same time setting as the rest of the EU and this has nothing whatsoever to do with the environment and energy savings. It is a load of bull dust, as our Australian cousins would say.
