Dylan Schumann, a nine year old pupil from Guilden Sutton C of E Primary School in Chester has won first prize in the North West region of a national poster design competition, organised by UK charity Sustrans.
Back in December last year, children from over 1,000 Sustrans Bike It schools across the UK were invited to design a poster with their New Years resolution on, for the chance to win a brand new Isla bike. Nationally there were 4,500 entries, with over 1,500 children submitting entries from schools across North West . Dylan claimed first prize for his poster and fantastic New Years resolution poem.
He was presented with his prize – an Isla bike - by Chester ’s Sustrans Bike It officer, Lydia Wilde, in a special awards assembly. The fact that Dylan had won a bike was kept a secret by the school and his parents so it came as a lovely surprise to him and his friends at the special assembly.
Sustrans has worked with the school, pupils and parents for over a year, to encourage children to choose two wheels for the school run. Lydia organises various events, activities and classroom sessions to give children the skills and confidence to cycle to school safely.
Lydia comments, “I was so pleased to hear that Dylan had won the poster competition. We had hundreds of entries but his poem really stood out – it was beautifully written, with a great New Years resolution. He’s really dedicated to cycling; he’s always the first to attend Bike it events, and absolutely loves his new bike.”
Sustrans works with 18 schools in Chester in partnership with Cycle Chester and Cheshire West and Chester Council.
Dylan Schumann’s winning New Years resolution poem:
“My bike is fun, my bike is cool, I sometimes ride my bike to school
But when it’s cold and wet and smelly, I’d rather sit and watch my telly.
But I was thinking when I sat, That watching telly makes me fat
So I’ve decided I would like, To spend more time on my bike.
So one night, with Mum and Dad, We all agreed that telly's bad
Instead of staying fat inside, This year we're all going out to ride.
Once a week we're going to go, Never mind the rain and snow
Out for a bike ride altogether, With gloves and coats against the weather.
We've all got lights and bells and hats, And Dad is good at fixing flats
We've got our own bright safety jackets, Mum says they all cost a packet.
But we all know that safe is best, So we all wear our safety vest
So this year we're doing our bit, And biking safely to get fit.
So with each wheel's revolution, Remember my year's resolution
By doing something we all like, We're getting fit, we're going by bike".
