The French skyscraper climber Alain Robert scaled new heights today as he clambered up the Pompidou Centre in Paris.The 48-year-old reached the top of the iconic 45.5m steel and glass structure, which is the largest museum for modern art in Europe and houses a vast public library and music centre.
Mr Robert, known for climbing some of the world's tallest and best-known buildings without ropes or other equipment, made sure passers-by would notice him climbing up the colourful building - also known as Beaubourg - in the 4th arrondissement of Paris, by wearing a bright red and orange outfit.
On his website the climate change protester admits that climbing is ‘his passion, his philosophy of life’ – despite suffering from vertigo.He also claims his obsession with climbing has left him ‘disabled up to 66 per cent’.The French daredevil, nicknamed 'Spiderman,’ was arrested in August after scaling a 57-storey building in Sydney with his bare hands.
The 5ft 5ins climber was detained at the top of the Lumiere building after reaching the top in around 20 minutes as dozens of people cheered him on from below.He had unfurled a banner which he attacked to the building using suction cups.
In 2009 Mr Robert was fined £435 for climbing the 41-storey Royal Bank of Scotland building in Sydney. Many of his past climbs have resulted in arrests and fines. The 48-year-old has climbed more than 70 skyscrapers around the world, including the Empire State Building in New York, the Sears Tower in Chicago and the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, according to his website.
