Alan Hinkes...bringing Haute Cuisine to the North Col

Alan 'Chapati' Hinkes: Pot Noodles are NOT on the menu.

Interviewed on BBC4's Today programme this morning ( 28-2-11) One of the UK's leading mountaineers,Alan Hinkes-first Briton to climb all of the world's 8000m peaks- announced his desire to bring gourmet foods and fine wines to one of the planets death zones.
All in the interests of charity. Hinkes is a passionate supporter of the UK's Altzeimers Society. Interviewed by Today's Sarah Montegue, Hinkes speaking from Kendal, spoke of the passion that mountaineers of yesteryear had for real food...'not this pre-packed processed rubbish' that forms the staple diet of most explorers of the greater ranges.

'Modern processed food is pretty grim' opined Hinkes. ' Although your appetite goes at altitude you still need good food...at least 5000 calories a day which is hard to carry'.

Hinkes hopes to bring his gourmet repast to the North Col of Everest where his team can sit at tables and dine on Wild Salmon and free range chicken. All washed down by the finest wines known to humanity ! He hopes his charitable efforts will go towards raising £1m towards the Altzeimers charity.

Known in the UK as 'Chapati Alan' after a bizarre mountaineering accident at altitude in the Himalayas when he sneezed after inhaling Chapati flour and suffered the agony of a prolapsed disc. He remained immobile for 25 days before recovering sufficiently to return to camp.
