British public baffled by fruit and vegetables

    Sad but true

    by Michael Smith (Veshengro)

Most Britons, so it would appear, have no idea when UK fruit and vegetables are in season, what traditional varieties are or even how they grow, according to research.

Despite people keen to eat healthily and slash their environmental footprint on fresh foods they buy in the supermarket, a survey has revealed a worrying lack of knowledge about home-grown produce.

This research has revealed that one in ten Britons think that strawberries grow on trees and one in twelve think Brussels sprouts do too. All one can say to that is HELP!!!

The survey of 14,000 people was commissioned by fresh fruit and vegetable supplier “From My Farm”.

Commercial manager Rick Sanderson said: “We really need to get back in tune with what nature can provide all year round to help us lead healthy lives.”

And he sure is not wrong there. We must reconnect people, adults and children alike, with the soil and with where food comes from.

One of the best ways to do this is to encourage more and more people to actually grow their own food and in order to do that some “grow your own fairs” or such like might be a great idea.
