By reaching the summit of Mount Everest on Thursday, Polar explorer, Eric Larsen became only the first person to have reached Everest, the North Pole and South Pole in less than one year.
To date, only 15 people in history, and none from the United States, have been to all three “poles,” according to Larsen’s website. And none of them did all three in one year.Larsen was able to summit Thursday after more than 44 days on Mount Everest, according to an announcement sent Friday.
Larsen, 39 said in August he thought the Everest climb would be the most challenging of his three expeditions. He has focused on mountaineering for the past three years, climbing in Colorado, Argentina, Washington and Alaska, summiting Denali last summer.
“For this entire climb, my mind has been precariously balanced between stark fear and awe,” Larsen wrote in his online expedition journal on Thursday.
“We made it,” Larsen said in an online audio clip after making it to the summit. “The Sherpas and I did it. It’s hard to believe.”
He also said his team “got the narrowest of weather windows” in which to successfully summit.
In January, Larsen and his team successfully completed a 750-mile, 48-day ski traverse to the South Pole. Larsen and a separate team reached the North Pole on April 22 after a 51-day, 500-mile push that included snowshoeing and skiing across shifting sea ice.
The objective of his three-pronged expedition, called “Save the Poles,”
is to call attention to environmental issues that affect those regions.
“I have been to the ‘front lines’ of global warming during my journeys to the North and South Poles,” Larsen said in a prepared statement. “We can save the poles and our planet if we act now.”
Larsen and his team plan to produce a documentary film, book and educational curriculum that will focus on the science of climate change, teamwork and the spirit of adventure. He also plans to develop a post-expedition multimedia lecture series for schools and organizations.
